Fakes Sunday, Aug 31 2008

As soon as the new season’s collections of handbags at astronomical prices appear in the Prada, Gucci or Todds windows in central Florence, the fake version will appear on the beaches of the smarter resorts or on the illegal makeshift stalls around the Ponte Vecchio. Unless you are a real expert, it is difficult to tell the genuine from the fake – some people believe that the latter are actually made in the same factories around Florence but by moonlighters and then sold by the African traders who have become a part of city life in Italy. If you are prepared to bargain hard – never accept the first price offered – you should be able to pick up a bag for up to a tenth of its ‘real’ price.

Astrud Gilberto Saturday, Aug 30 2008

Back in 1964 Brazilian chanteuse Astrud Gilberto turned the world on to bossa nova with her iconic hit ‘The Girl from Ipanema’. Since then, she’s recorded with all and sundry, from the cheesy James Last to uber producer Quincy Jones, and made a name for herself as one of the great jazz vocalists of our time. Despite the fact that her salad days are over, Gilberto isn’t just reprising the glory days. Her most recent album was released only a year ago – ‘Talkin’ Verve’, recorded with pianist Gil Evans.

Cyrus Chestnut Thursday, Aug 28 2008

This Baltimore-born jazz composer is in town as part of a major centenary homage to Duke Ellington. Cyrus Chestnut, who now has several albums to his name, with the latest one released last year, moves in the hard bop scenes, although there is some definite gospel influence in his work. A chance to hear one of the most imaginative jazz pianists in the world, in town with his trio for one night only.

Coasters Sunday, Aug 24 2008

Known to stay open until 8am, this is the ideal place to prove you have the stamina of a genuine party animal. Conveniently located near many of the city’s best nightclubs, you can sink a cocktail here to put you in the mood for a night of shimmying on a sweat-soaked dancefloor- or drop in for a night-cap after the clubs have closed. The bar is well-stocked, the music from the sound-system unerringly hip and there’s always a queue to play the table-football game in the back room.

Ice Hockey Tuesday, Aug 5 2008

These days, it is hard to walk down the street without seeing some reference to the Barça centenary year, and Barça does not just mean football. Some of its finest teams can be found in other sports such as handball and ice-hockey, and their premier team in the latter sport is playing against Toulouse as part of a series of friendly matches for the centenary commemoration. Something laid-back to watch before the European Finals and the Spanish Grand Prix, which land here soon afterwards.
