Iris Viewing Saturday, Jan 31 2009

It’s no great secret that Japanese people have a thing about flowers, and the blooming of the irises in the mid-June rainy season is seen as the traditional harbinger of summer. Just about all of the city’s traditional gardens – including the popular Meiji Jingu inner garden – will be filled to bursting with cameras, tripods and amateur photographers, but if you can see past them, the iris flowers are actually quite spectacular.

Want to go to Kamchatka? Friday, Jan 30 2009

Want to go to Kamchatka?? This place is amazing. Really amazing. Travel here is expensive (no roads, rail etc. therefore its choppers or planes (AEROFLOT!!!!!!) all the way) but could be really rewarding. You definitely need contacts or agencies if you plan to get much beyond the airport though.

Kotelnich is one of the oldest towns in Russia, older than Moscow and with its first records dated 1143 AD. It now has a population of 40,000. The town is situated on the banks of the Vyatka River, on the crossroads of the Trans-Siberian railway. Boats that ply the Vyatka can reach the Caspian, Azof, Black and Baltic Seas – and, in fact, the best way to travel in this low country is on the waterways, using water-taxis. In winter many of the roads in the black soil plains are impassable.

It is probably most famous for its fossils of ancient reptiles. Rocks of about 250 million years old are exposed along the banks of the Vyatka. It is possible during the summer months to visit palaeontologists encamped along the river’s banks and observe them at work – you can also visit the palaeontological museum in town and see the skeletons they have excavated.

The museum of the Arctic and Antarctica in St Petersburg has two floors of displays about the polar region, especially the Soviet territories. Big paintings of polar scenes adorn the walls, and dioramas and models on the history of polar research, as well as on meteorological and biological aspects of the regions, can be seen. On the second floor you can study the life of Eskimo, Lapp and Jakut peoples, as well as the flora and fauna of the taiga, tundra and polar regions. There is also information on the geological structure of Siberia and Antarctica.

The museum is located at uliza Marata, which runs parallel to Ligorsky Prospekt.

Muriel Leferle + Paroles d’Appelés Sunday, Jan 25 2009

These are two short films by photographer and documentary-maker Raymond Depardon. ‘Muriel Leferle’ follows a Paris prostitute through interviews with magistrates after her arrest on suspicion of stealing a car. She talks lovingly of fast cars, but insists she couldn’t steal one as she can’t drive, and, being HIV positive, boasts of her good health. ‘Paroles d’Appelés’ (made for the Ministry of Defence AIDS prevention programme) is an interesting series of snapshots of young men on military service expressing their views on AIDS. (In French.)

Solaris Saturday, Jan 10 2009

In a city like Paris where what you wear is of such vital importance, it’s no surprise that sunglasses should be chosen with the same seriousness as any other item of clothing. This functional and well-stocked shop is a good bet if you don’t want to be seen wearing shoddy shades. It has literally wall-to-wall sunglasses, from the likes of Gucci and Armani to home-grown but very chic brands such as Vuarnet. Mirrors are set between the racks, making it the perfect place to try glasses on without being pressured by shop assistants. There are also branches in the Forum des Halles (1st) and on rue d’Arcole (4th).

Chiko & Toko Cooking Sunday, Jan 4 2009

This collaboration between the Amsterdam-based Japanese artists Tomoko Take and Chikako Watanabe fuses art with food. During workshops with groups of 8-10-year-olds and some local chefs, Chiko & Toko will be developing a five-course menu, which will then be prepared and served during the evening on the last two weekends of August. During regular gallery hours, one can marvel at this kitchen along with the special cooking costumes, menus, diagrams and photographs illustrating the cooking adventures.
