pAn Amsterdam Sunday, Feb 28 2010

110 art and antiques dealers from around the world come together for pAn Amsterdam, one of the largest antique fairs in the country. While every era and part of the globe will be represented, this year’s focus exhibition is called ‘Treasury of the Past’ and is made up of prize pieces from the National Museum of Antiquities. Art ‘detectives’ from the Art Loss Register will be also on hand to authenticate pieces.

Montecasino Thursday, Feb 25 2010

Casinos seemed to spring up overnight all over Joburg the minute gambling laws were relaxed. Gamblers can now get their fix much closer to home. The latest to be launched is Montecasino, although to be fair it’s a whole lot more than a casino. Created as an exact replica of a Tuscan village, it also offers a glitzy array of other leisure options including shops, restaurants, bars, cinemas, theatre and an interactive family entertainment venue for virtual reality games.

The Immacolata Tuesday, Feb 23 2010

Once a year, the Pope ventures into designer-label land to celebrate the feast of the Immaculate Conception, traditionally the day on which pre-Christmas festivities in Italy begin in earnest. To celebrate the Virgin Mary, John Paul II visits Piazza di Mignanelli, next door to the Spanish Steps, and with the aid of the city fire brigade and an extendable ladder, hangs a garland round the neck of a statue of the Madonna … atop the marble column just outside McDonald’s.

Mardi Gras Festival Monday, Feb 22 2010

It’s come a long way since the very first parade was scarred by some pretty vicious police action to arrive at its present position as a major highlight of the Sydney social calendar. This year’s Mardi Gras kicks off with a free party on the steps of the Opera House and culminates in a street parade that is as politically in your face as it is witty. In between there’s a suitably outrageous collection of events, balls and concerts. For the more physically inclined the Physique 2001 and the 2001 Mardi Gras Sports Festival might be the place to be.

The Jayhawks Thursday, Feb 18 2010

The band that helped inspire a whole generation of new country and folk rock artists, from Counting Crows to The Walkabouts, finally make it to Barcelona. The Jayhawks started winning local fans with their fresh mixture of bluegrass, folk and rock in the late-1980s. Albums such as ‘Hollywood Town Hall’ and ‘Tomorrow the Green Grass’ found a place on many critical top ten lists, but never really broke sales-wise. Co-founder Mark Olson left in 1996, but vocalist-songwriter Gary Louris and the rest of the band have since produced two more albums of shimmering country-rock melodies.

Burning Spear + Culture + The Wailers Saturday, Feb 13 2010

Let down your dreadlocks and get ready to groove at the biggest reggae festival to hit Africa. The headlining acts at ‘Home to my Roots’ are all genuine reggae acts direct from Jamaica. Burning Spear (aka Winston Rodney) is a compelling live performer, while seven of the original band members that toured with Bob Marley are here as part of The Wailers, now on their 30th world tour. Lead singer Gary ‘Nesta’ Pines is widely regarded as the their best frontman since the late, great Bob himself.

Old Master Prints from the Berolzheimer Collection Saturday, Feb 6 2010

The California Palace of the Legion of Honor débuts an exhibition of recent acquisitions, the Michael Berolzheimer Collection of old master prints. Comprised of some 80 prints from the collection, the exhibition represents a cross section of Italian, German and Dutch graphic art dating from the 15th through the 17th-centuries. Among the collection are 28 prints by Albrecht Durer, including the series of 20 woodcuts entitled ‘The Life of the Virgin’. The exhibition also features some 16 etchings by Rembrandt.

From beers and tapas to wines and a full restaurant menu, Bacaro Jazz attracts an international twentysomething crowd for the marathon happy hours and occasional spot of live jazz. The ‘FraBellini’ cocktail is a must.
