Not too many city councils get into the nightclub business, and hardly any would have the sense of cool to organise Supermercat, a regular Saturday happening initiated by Barcelona City’s Institut de Cultura. Held in the versatile Mercat de les Flors theatre complex, the new ‘Supermarket’ is club culture with high-dosage multi-media injection. Art installations, theatre, comedy, film and experimental music share the three main spaces with DJs and dance ambience. With some important local art collectives involved, the line-ups look good. Other clubs are even protesting about unfair competition.

This masked seductor hunts the women of 16th-century Seville. Pompous and pleasure-seeking, ‘Don Giovanni’ is a character both despised and admired throughout Western literature and art, yet nowhere is he more effectively portrayed than in this Mozart masterpiece. One of the 12 productions by the Salzburg genius, ‘Don Giovanni’ is heralded as one of the greatest operas ever composed. Showcasing heedless pursuit, deception, murder, revenge and steamy passion, Don Giovanni is beyond captivating – it’s truly seductive.

The righteous babe from Buffalo has a superb repertoire of songs which appeal to the disaffected punk and old-folkie alike. Difranco’s tremendous voice, fine acoustic playing and radiant smile make her issue-tackling songs that much easier to enjoy. Her Vienna show comes in the wake of her latest album ‘Swing Set’, a mish-mash of outtakes including her convincing version of Dylan’s ‘Hurricane’. Ani’s band has also been fleshed out with a small brass section but really she has little difficulty rocking the house on her pierced and tattooed tod.

The New Orleans Gay Men’s Chorus is a well-honed musical ensemble that goes a bit nuts at Christmas. The chorus’s now-annual holiday show takes leave of their familiar tuxedo stage presence and assumes the look of the Ballet Trockadero, the famous gender-blending comic troupe. Presented in costumes that can only be described as ‘revenge of the Christmas drag queens’, the show includes tons of holiday songs. It’s all very funny, very entertaining and the very essence of Christmas with merriment and good will for all.

Through photographs of the various summer villas, palaces and hunting lodges, visitors are presented with a behind-the-scenes view of Empress Elisabeth’s favourite haunts. This show is strictly for monarchic nostalgics.
