The Via Crucis Monday, May 31 2010

Rome and Easter have always gone hand-in-hand and the traditional Good Friday Stations of the Cross, leading from the Roman Forum to the Colosseum, has been an annual event since Paul VI reintroduced it over three decades ago. The ritual, however, with its stop-pray-start routine, is rapidly becoming a real Via Crucis for the increasingly ailing Pontiff. A very big deal for believers, the ceremony attracts as many people as the Urbs et Orbis Easter message in St Peter’s Square two days later.

Translated Acts Friday, May 28 2010

This wide-ranging exhibition at the House of World Cultures focuses on avant-garde art from South East Asia. On show are photographs, video, documentaries and digital art works by more than 30 artists from China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. The works aim to reflect the ‘radical changes’ that have taken place in these societies since WW2. They also offer an insight into topics such as gender, politics, social conditioning and the influence of religion.

Tunnel Monday, May 24 2010

220 Twelfth Ave at 27th St (212-695-4682)

Subway: C, E to 23rd St. Fri 10pm-6am, Sat 11pm-noon, Sun 10pm-4am.

A stunningly massive place with equally impressive decor–there’s a unisex bathroom complete with a bar and banquettes, a coffeehouse and the mind-blowing, psychedelic Cosmic Cavern, designed by pop artist Kenny Scharf (floor-to-ceiling fake fur, Lava lamps, Internet terminals, black-light paintings and a fountain). The 1996 police raid dealt a blow to Tunnel’s spirit (not to mention its trendy cachet) from which the club hasn’t fully recovered. The place looks shabby these days; the main dance floor isn’t very conducive to disco epiphanies, and the crowd is mostly quite mainstream. It’s such an incredible space that it deserves at least one visit. Head for one of the many smaller rooms, which feature more interesting music, decor and people.

Award-winning Hungarian Press Photos Wednesday, May 19 2010

The best news, feature and sports photographs taken by the Hungarian press will be shown in a display of local prize-winners. The photos, awarded for being the year’s best, sometimes display more life in a black and white image than the average colour movie. Sports shots are likely to feature Hungarian Olympic medallists in action. Past news features have included essays about poverty in the countryside and a week on police beat. A chance to see Hungary through the eyes of its own press.

Internet Café Plus Sunday, May 16 2010

Prague’s hippest and cosiest internet café has opened in a space adjoining Bohemia Bagel, long respected as an expat beachhead into the territory of heavy, meaty Czech cuisine. Grab an onion bagel with cream cheese, an arabica coffee – the blend is supplied by local coffee empire Ebel – and log on at one of 20 high-speed PCs. All at a mere 1 Kc per minute. The leather sofas in back are best for composing long missives, while the bank of terminals out front afford views onto busy Ujezd street, good for tracking new arrivals.

Life Imprints by Lieve Prins Friday, May 14 2010

Lieve Prins uses a different kind of easel – a Canon 200 Colour Laser Copier. The Dutch artist works in the ever-growing field of Electrography and makes art by placing objects ranging from models’ hands to fresh squid directly on the copier. It’s a spontaneous and instantaneous art, both colourful and expressive. Love it or hate it – it’s going to cause a stir. For once it’s the medium not the product that’s disposable.

Arturo Sandoval Monday, May 10 2010

Last year, actor Andy Garcia portrayed Cuban musician Arturo Sandoval in a biopic for HBO. He showed how this brilliant performer took the brave step to escape from Castro’s dictatorship. An energetic trumpeter with flashy phrases, high note acrobatics and a dynamic, charismatic playing style, Sandoval has, since his defection, found fame and success in his newly adopted country. In the 1990s, his Afro-Cuban group reflected his remarkable range. Tonight, he appears with the Florida Philharmonic to play some of his greatest hits.
