Jacob Lawrence Saturday, Mar 13 2010

Arguably the foremost African-American artist, Jacob Lawrence died this year leaving behind an extraordinary body of work, including an innovative series of portraits of great black heroes. This month visitors can see all 41 of Lawrence’s narrative paintings about Haitian leader Toussaint L’Ouverture at the Norton Museum of Art. An enigmatic figure, L’Ouverture is shown in all his facets – outraged slave, revolutionary hero, merciless soldier, unbending dictator and chained prisoner.

The Jayhawks Thursday, Feb 18 2010

The band that helped inspire a whole generation of new country and folk rock artists, from Counting Crows to The Walkabouts, finally make it to Barcelona. The Jayhawks started winning local fans with their fresh mixture of bluegrass, folk and rock in the late-1980s. Albums such as ‘Hollywood Town Hall’ and ‘Tomorrow the Green Grass’ found a place on many critical top ten lists, but never really broke sales-wise. Co-founder Mark Olson left in 1996, but vocalist-songwriter Gary Louris and the rest of the band have since produced two more albums of shimmering country-rock melodies.

The Nutcracker Sunday, Jan 31 2010

Bring the kids and enjoy the beloved Christmas-time ballet, ‘The Nutcracker’. The Hungarian National Ballet will dance to Tchaikovsky’s sumptuous music for several performances this month. As most know, the story is about a girl who receives a nutcracker in the shape of a soldier for Christmas Eve. In her dreams that night, the nutcracker and his fellow soldiers do battle with the forces of the evil Mouse King, to protect the family Christmas tree.
