Arguably the foremost African-American artist, Jacob Lawrence died this year leaving behind an extraordinary body of work, including an innovative series of portraits of great black heroes. This month visitors can see all 41 of Lawrence’s narrative paintings about Haitian leader Toussaint L’Ouverture at the Norton Museum of Art. One of the finest artists and craftsmen of the Art Deco period, René; Lalique created figures and sculptures in glass that still amaze and entrance today. The setting for this exhibition of his work couldn’t be more perfect; it’s inside a former royal palace whose glass panelling was designed by Lalique himself. The three-dimensional figures worked into the front doors are something to marvel at. If you like the glass, you’ll love the souvenir shop, where real Lalique products can be purchased at inflated prices.

Casinos seemed to spring up overnight all over Joburg the minute gambling laws were relaxed. Gamblers can now get their fix much closer to home. The latest to be launched is Montecasino, although to be fair it’s a whole lot more than a casino. Created as an exact replica of a Tuscan village, it also offers a glitzy array of other leisure options including shops, restaurants, bars, cinemas, theatre and an interactive family entertainment venue for virtual reality games.

Brightly coloured and intricately patterned telephone wire baskets are fast gaining international recognition as a new and vibrant art form. The tradition of weaving coiled baskets, from strips of coloured telephone wire, originated in the urban areas of Kwazulu Natal and many of the bowls with their distinctive geometric patterns have become colectors items. This superb exhibition is a collaberation between well known French artist Herve Di Rosa and members of the Syanda Wire Weavers Collective who worked together to create some interesting adaptations to traditional basket weaving.

As temperatures rise, the Viennese descend on the Tichy ice-cream parlour in the 10th district. Famed as Vienna’s finest purveyor of gelati for almost 50 years, Tichy have nonetheless remained true to their origins by keeping the kitsch 1950s’ graphic style of their advertising and resolutely refusing to open any other branches in the city. Those who wish to partake of their famed apricot ice-cream dumplings or their 25 different flavours can take the underground to the bustling Reumannplatz, the heart of working-class Vienna, and get a whole new angle on the city.
